Poisoning cases in Europe due to Kinder eggs

The British Food Standards Agency announced that chocolate maker Ferrero has recalled quantities of Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs in the United Kingdom due to its link to salmonella.

This came after about 57 people, mostly young children, contracted food poisoning after an outbreak of salmonella bacteria, which can be related to a type of chocolate sold in the form of eggs, known as “Kinder Surprise”.

"This recall is linked to a possible relationship to an outbreak of salmonella, and a number of these cases were in young children," the agency said in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, investigations by the Health Security agencies in the United Kingdom, Public Health in Scotland, Public Health in Wales and Public Health in Northern Ireland, revealed a link between reported cases of salmonella poisoning across the country and "Kinder eggs".

She noted that as a precaution, Ferrero recalled the products and advised people not to eat them. The British Food Standards Agency said the eggs were all manufactured in the same factory, however, the company's other products are not believed to be affected.

The agency advised consumers that anyone who purchased the product should not eat kinder eggs infected with the microbe, preferably before: All dates between July 11, 2022 and October 7, 2022

She stressed that no evidence of the presence of bacteria was found in other products of the Italian group for the manufacture of chocolate.

Ferrero also withdrew hundreds of tons of Kinder chocolate eggs from the French market, after being suspected of salmonella.

Yesterday, the French health authorities said that at least 15 suspected cases of salmonella had been identified in the country.

And the “Ferrero” group had said that all the products that were withdrawn from the British and French markets are made in Belgium, noting that the examination did not prove that the other Kinder products offered for sale were infected with salmonella.

"We take food safety issues very seriously, and we sincerely apologize for what happened," she added.

It is worth noting that the symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever, while most cases are treated within a few days, symptoms can be severe and lead to hospitalization, especially in young people and those with weakened immune systems.
